The relationship between fish, air, light and water.
Light and nutrients in the water stimulate plant growth which uses nitrogen and co2 and produces oxygen. Fish waste products are nutrients and are broken down into harmless forms of nitrogen and used in the process.Plants in an aquarium act as a natural filter. The challenge is to balance the needs of plants with the needs of the fish - and not to end up with a tank of green water. Larger more attractive plants inhibit the growth of single cell algae which cause green water.
A UV sterilizer will kill single cell algae.
